Architectural Restriction Dos and Don’ts

Many associations, particularly homeowners and common interest community associations, have architectural restrictions in their declarations or in rules that the board has enacted. Typical restrictions may affect additions to homes or townhomes, decks, patios, fences, pools, sheds, swing sets and other attached or stand-alone structures. Some restrictions are outright bans, while others require owners to submit an application for review prior to construction. For a variety of reasons, specific, objective guidelines in your restrictions and prompt, consistent enforcement of them may help your association avoid construction violations.
